Matt Cutts from Google did a presentation at an SEO conference where he had a slide that said
SPAM = Sites Positioned Above Mine
While it was sort of a joke, I really like that Spam definition.
But in order to not get sandboxed, we need to to know what Search Engines consider SPAM so we can stay at least one step ahead of the game. It’s a fact that Google (and all search engines) are on the lookout for Spam. Google has many guidelines for Identifying Search Engine Spam including this word document that they have given to some site reviewers.
The document talks about Sneaky Redirects, 100% Frame Sites, Hidden Text / Hidden Links, Porn on Expired Domains, Secondary Search Results / PPC, thin affiliates and more. While the doccument is over a year old, it’s a worthwhile read to learn how some low level google site reviewers are trained.
