With all the talk of v7ndotcom-elursrebmem lately, I’m starting to think that mainstream business may soon realize the value of SEO Contests. However, in order to prevent people from trying to pollute the sponsorship of the contests and to attract the big players to the table, we need to up the ante.
Think about it: the big guns in SEO compete for keywords that are worth $10-25k per day. They’re not going to step foot in the game unless it’s more than JUST about ego. I believe we could probably attract some of these players if first prize were in the six figures.
SEO Contests could be held like Pro Tours in other fields if the prizes were large enough: with new “main event” contests every 3 months or so. There are many other consideration like the weighting of the 3 search engines and perhaps even 2 types of contests: 1 that allowd the winning result to be on any site and the other that restricted the winner to new domains that are first after the keyword announcments.
In any event, I know there is a Good and profitable use for the domain seocontests.com. I threw up a page there last year and still haven’t gotten arround to it.
If we can constuct a business plan and find someone with the time and ambition to run it, I know it would be a winner. If you want a crack at it (or just want to buy it outright), let me know.

I’d look toward some of the SES conference sponsors for prizes. Also, any SEO software/subscription services like Wordtracker or SEO Elite. Six figures might be tough, especially for ever 3 months

I think your wrong. The real big players are truly under the radar type folk that are to busy making bank to enter some contest that serves no real purpose other than to let other webmasters and SE grunts look up their skirt.
if no one has jumped on this yet I love the idea, cant do 6 figures but depending on how its all run could do something in the 4-5 figure.
drop me an email
I think this is a GREAT idea. I’d love to contribute however possible. I think SEO contests have the potential to be a TREND rather than FAD if you do it right.
let me know if I can help.

Just my 2 cents: Not a good idea to do this on GoDaddy. They will take the domain from you, aleging spam.
