How to Add Sexy Bookmarklet Buttons to Your Blog

A couple of days ago, I noticed one of my stories made it on the new site searchenginepress.com. What I really liked were their sexy bookmarklets that look like this:

People love their social bookmarking sites and if one of your story gets heavily bookmarkleted on any of these sites, you will have thousands of new visitors coming to your site. So why not make it as easy as possiable for that to happen?

I liked these bookmarklet buttons so much that I added them to SEO Black Hat and will now show you how to do add them to your Wordpress blog.

1. Download this zip which contains all the Bookmarklet Images and the code for Wordpress.
2. Unzip the files
3. Create the directory: http://yoursite.com/bookmarklets/
4. Upload all the images to that directory.
5. Open the sexy-bookmarklets.txt file in a text editor.
6. Cut and paste the code where you want the buttons to appear.

That was easy, wasn’t it?

Some notes: I removed blinklist because the code they supply returns an error message (it doesn’t work yet). If they fix the code, I will update this post.

I added a “submit to slashdot” icon even though I think it will be a cold day in hell before seoblackhat.com makes it onto slashdot. But hey, go ahead and submit this one to slashdot anyway; maybe today’s the day for Satan to get out his winter coat and for seoblackhat.com to crash because of too much traffic.

  3. [...] The other day while looking for something new to read online I googled “SEO blog“, but without the brackets. On the second page I found SEO Blackhat and one of his postings, was about social bookmarking. He even came up with a little HTML/PHP to make adding buttons to your WordPress blog to enable people to bookmark your postings in the many competing services. As cool as that is, somebody is working a full fledged plugin, which just may be added to blog.muschamp.ca in the near future. [...]

If you want an easy way to add both social bookmarklets and tags to blog posts, you can try this:

    http://www.evilgeniusmarketing.com/ice/tag-generator.cfm

It doesn’t do the sexy icons but I could add that feature if it is desirable to enough users.

    Enjoy!

  5. Add Bookmarklets to Typepad

Part of my blog overhaul included adding bookmarklets to each post. This took a bit of work on my part, mostly due to my lack of html knowledge. For those of you using Typepad, I’ll give you an easy way

I’m pretty new to blogging (foolish me!), having just launched my blog a month ago. I can get around HTML enough to be dangerous, but the language of php, asp, and the like falls into the YIKES! category for me. One thing I’ve been wanting to do is add syndication buttons to my site, and was very appreciative that you provided a means to do so.

I’ve downloaded your bookmarklets file, and your instructions seem simple and straight forward enough… but damn, I’m still not sure quite what to do. A couple questions:

Do you handle the coding tweaks from the admin panel within WordPress, or must it be done via some other access?

When I downloaded the WordPress program last month, I followed their instructions for uploading to my server. Knowing very little about MySQL, I figured I’d botch the upload. Much to my surprise, I succeeded and the blog was up and running! But now I see the areas where I’d like to tweak a thing or two…

I have been learning/using DreamWeaver 8 for the past 5 months, and have built a few new sites using basic HTML protocol. So I loaded the WordPress files into DW8, but when I access the files from within that software, they all contain code that I am completely unfamiliar with. Very little HTML, and almost all PHP.

So, if I wanted to add the syndication buttons that you so kindly offered in your original posting so that they apprear on each message I send to my blog, what do I need to do? Can I do it thru DW, or is it easier to do it thru the WP admin panel?

Any advise you offer would be a great help and very much appreciated.

Keep up the awesome work. I love this blog and visit just about every day.

    Best regards,

    Twanster
