What A9 Should Do

In a recent post, Greg Linden asks, “What should Amazon and A9 do?”

Well, I mentioned the “Google Storefront model” of making Affiliate marketing easy for the masses. If Amazon launched this service before anyone else, it could have a huge impact on its future on the web.

It’s also not too late for A9 to get into the game with their own engine. Why are they still letting Google supply their results? That’s so 3 years ago. Buy up some innovative new search technologies and start creating your expanding your own index.

Another great opportunity is for A9 to create a Digg / Delicious-like site where only people who have verified Credit Cards can vote. These other social bookmarking sites are doomed to failure. Without editorial control, and without a way to verify that a user is just one user, these other sites will soon be flooded with spam. Because so many people have purchased at Amazon, they can more or less ensure that 1 person = 1 vote. Sure it can still be gamed, but not nearly as easily.

   Say I wasn’t a spammer but a normal user of such service. Would I feel comfortable bookmarking everything I want knowing it can be all tracked back to me through my credit card details? Somehow, I don’t think so….

   How do you keep up with all of this stuff? Good idea about the credit cards. Somehow or another all of the bigger search engines are going to have to move towards a model that isn’t so easily gamed as backlinks, etc.

   Yahoo could probably do something like that with Yahoo! Wallet I’de guess, but scaled up. It’s kind of surprising that they don’t put more weight on my.yahoo etc. than they do.

   Sad, but true.

   Delicious is already getting tons of spam. I see it on their front page all the time.
