Fireworks in Medellin

About every 2-3 weeks here in Medellin, Colombia they have fireworks going off in the City. Since I figured there can’t be a holiday that often, I decided to ask one of my local friends here “why?”.

He said, “every time they get a big shipment of cocaine into the US, there is a big celebration – Fireworks, parties, and lots of money being thrown around. ” So now every time I hear fireworks going off here, we always chuckle because we know that (most likely) a big shipment of coke just landed in the United States.

It’s a different world down here.

Kidnapping is a huge business over here. They have about 45 reported per month in colombia and My friends brother-in-law was kidnapped home invasion style in the time I’ve been down here. That was about a month ago – the kidnappers have not even asked for a ransom yet! The police say it’s normal to have to wait 3 months bofore getting a ransom request.

Plus, it’s a little scary how many people have guns here.

But it’s really a beautiful country. You just gotta be careful.
