Mark Cuban is a Hypocrite

Hilarious. Here is someone who owns a freaking basketball team calling someone else greedy!

All i know is that when the black hat hackers see easy money, they take it. I also know that they are greedy and a jealous bunch. The more they see the more they take . . .

Pot meet kettle. Kettle this is pot.

He then goes on in classic Cuban style to blur the lines between PPC Arbitrage, Splogging and Click Fraud.

Sorry Mark, but Capitalizing on discrepancies in bid/ask markets is not fraud. Creating a “newsmaster site” or “Niche Aggregator” (he calls them splogs) is not fraud.

And who the hell is he to complain about splogs and scraper sites anyway? He owns Icerocket, one of the largest scraper sites on the Net!

Hey Mark, what percentage of the 36,200 icerocket pages indexed in Google are original content?

Well, 31,900 contain the word “tag” in the URL. 99% of those are pages like:

blogs.icerocket.com/tag/gifts
blogs.icerocket.com/tag/pictures
blogs.icerocket.com/tag/english

That is TEXTBOOK scraper. There is no original content and there are sponsor links that give nothing to the original content producers. And when I say nothing, I mean that even the citation links are nofollow. There is NO difference between that and what he calls splogging.

From the wikipedia:

The term hypocrisy is also commonly used in a way which should be more specifically termed a double standard, bias, or inconsistency. An example would be when one honestly believes that one group of individuals should be held to a different set of morals than another group.

Hypocrisy also refers to the act of criticizing others for behavior which one engages in as well, or in other words, not practicing what you preach.

All that’s missing from that wikipedia entry is this picture:

That Icerocket marks every outgoing link as ‘nofollow’ is actually an really interesting observation. Ok, so does del.icio.us but del.icio.us is a site only driven by user submited content. But Icerocket is more searchengine alike and it seems that they don’t trust much in their own software. Does the huhgest scraper site around, Google, use ‘nofollow’ when displaying searchresults? I mean, think about it, it is even their own standard! No they don’t, since they believe that the links presented are the most relevant for the given search term. Why the hell should they mark them as __not relevant__?! Ha!

What I actually try to say is, what does a a site that has only ‘nofollow’ links on it indicates about the site itself or the underlying software. Nothing more than: “Ok, I present you shit and we know it is shit, since our software is shit – so everything is marked as ‘nofollow’/simply not relevant”. I would be quite curious if there comes a day when the Googlebot also starts to think that way about the presenting site.

While I second your opinion that this is clearly done in order not to give credit to the linked sites, I still think that there is a huge difference how a scraper site uses the content of others. I run some site on my own – no I don’t ‘SEO’ and I still call it searchengine spamming – and often find my content ripped of even though I run some (as I would call them) ‘advanced’ bottraps. The way Icerocket does, I’m personally fine with since there is still a backreference to the original content. When I see entire pages regorganised and presented by your ‘colleagues’ as own content, that is the point where the trouble/fun starts for me :). Mostly trouble, since most of the ‘search engine guild’ does look to me more than marketers than programmers and seem to have no clue how to reorganise around Googles filters without getting caught/or even affecting the scraped sites. Ok, as for the later one I guess don’t give a shit…

  6. […] While most find that logic questionable at best, one post along those lines made a very interesting allegation: That Icerocket, the prominent blog search engine owned by Mark Cuban, was using the "rel=nofollow" tag on the links in its result pages, depriving bloggers of any additional search engine benefit.
