Wouldn’t it be great if you had a 500 Gig Hard Drive full of all the best movies ever made? Problem is, every time you look for a list, they always have these films on there from the 40s, 50s, 60s and early to mid 70s.
Who wants to see that crap?
So I’ve gone through the trouble of sorting through the best movies from only the last 30 years. I was going to put an Amazon link to them, but I’d rather you go download or Rent & Rip them just to piss off the RIAA MPAA (whoops).
So, from the land of off topic posts, I present to you the list of the 250 Best Movies Made in the Last 30 years.

You need to qualify your source of data and intended audience.
Just off of the top of my head (in no particular order other than train of thought)
Pearl Harbour
Oceans 11
Oceans 12 (maybe not as good)
Mission Imposible
Twister
Perfect Storm
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind (massive at the time)
Where are all the Bond films?
Highlander
Brewsters Millions
Trading Places
The Secret of My Success
Big
Apollo 13
Source of the data is anywhere I could find. The audiance was really for me – because I’m building the 500 Gig hard drive . . . then i realized the list was pretty good and figured I’d share it and look for some additional input. The addition of brewsters Millions looks OK.
Surely leaving “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” off the list was an oversight.
I agree with Andy that the intended audience is important, but Andy, Pearl Harbor & Please tell me not the Ben Affleck piece of crap that came out a few years ago, and you have Oceans 12!! Sigh, Julia Roberts playing her character Tess Ocean, who then plays the role of her real self Julia Roberts should go down as one of the lamest ideas in movie history.
What about the Godfather movies?
As long as Brazil and Fight Club are in there, I don’t see no problem
Some Monty Pythons (Quest for the Holy Grail, Meaning of Life, …) maybe ?
oh and what about Escape from New York ?
have not seen it for a while, but dude, Snake Plissken rules !
:p
All three Terminators, Pulp Fiction, the Goonies, Blade Runner, Alien & Aliens. The list gets my stamp of approval.
[...] SEO Blackhat has wrote a really great post about the 250 best movies made in the last 30 years and how good it would be if you could put them all in one big hard drive. While I agree on most of the movies he listed, I don’t agree on the hard drive issue. I don’t want to have a hard drive filled with movies, that I will need to carry it around with me where ever I go. No, I don’t think a hard drive is the right answer. I would rather go to IMDB, browse through all the movies they have, choose the one I want and then watch it online, instantly, freely and without any interference. But I think it will take a little bit longer until this can happen. Share this Post:These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. [...]
if you havent seen Shogun Assassin, I highly recommend it.
Also I don’t agree with this IMDB rating for Leonard Part 6. i mean the movie has Bill Cosby riding an ostrich!
hows about these:
dangerous minds
pitch black
chronicles of riddick
40 yr old virgin
old school
lords of dogtown (awesome)
lord of war
weatherman
the saint
beautiful mind
romper stomper
whale rider
chopper
the castle
Fast Times at Ridgemont High was certainly an oversight! Thanks for that one.
The first 2 Godfather movies and Holy grail are going on the Hard Drive, but the list was the last 30 years and those 3 are slightly eariler.
Shoegun Assassin – I haven’t seen but will definately check out. Escape from New York I can’t remeber . . .
[...] Best movies made in the last 30 years [...]
I have not seen:
Lords of Dogtown (2005)
Lord of War (2005)
The Castle (1997/I)
Whale Rider (2002)
but I will in the near future. Thanks!
Oh man. I would definitely have my two favorite action movies:
The Bourne Identity (2002)
Ronin (1998)
and maybe:
Master and Commander (2003) (also has the best mixed movie soundtrack I’ve heard)
Searching for Bobby Fischer (1994?)
Zoolander (2001?)
The RIAA has nothing to do with movies. Know your enemy
I would check these out if you haven’t already, some of my favourites…
The Ice Storm
16 Candles
Kalifornia
State Of Grace
Pump Up The Volume
Less Than Zero
Happy Gilmour
Running On Empty
Uncommon Valor
Cable Guy
A Simple Plan
A River Runs Through It
Point Of No Return
The Last Temptation Of Christ
Steel Magnolias (for the ladies)
Field Of Dreams
Great Expectations
Stripes
– I would have to go with “Dogtown and Z-Boys” vs. “Lords of Dogtown”
– What about making it 35 years and adding “Jaws”.
I had made a list of 100 about 4 years ago and I’m amazed at how many are on your list!
Thanks for the list and some movies that I’ve never come across.
I am sorry, you have some really horrible/mediocre movies on your list.
48 Hrs. (1982) – Bleh
Animal House (1978) – Come on now…
Army of Darkness (1992) – Please say it ain’t so.
Back to the Future (1985) – Are we 12?
Beverly Hills Cop (1984) – Please tell me this was a mistake…
Boondock Saints,The (1999) – The only people I know who liked this are Irish.
Descent, The (2005) – You hurt me, you really hurt me.
Donnie Darko (2001) – Just kill me now. Do it. DO IT.
Dumb & Dumber (1994) – Really, Where is this going?
Fifth Element, The (1997) – Did you even watch this film?
Hackers (1995) – Giant fish lips do not a good film make.
Major League (1989) – Wild Thing… No no no make it stop.
Shrek (2001) – Oh I get it your joking.
Shrek 2 (2004) – Um, Jokes over…
South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut (1999) – Ok, I just can’t do this any more.
I think a better title for this post would be, 250 Movies I have seen in my Life Time. Not that they are all bad, you have many very good choices, but I am sure you have not put any thought into this list. What entertained you that one time does not qualify what is great. That said I have not seen 20-30% of these so you might have some more good films hidden away, but you may also have even worse atrocities …
Please for the love of all that is hold, take down Caddyshack!

Great list. Here’s a few…
Better Off Dead
Conan the Barbarian
Delicatessen
Empire of the Sun
Meatballs
Murderball
Napoleon Dynamite
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Jerk
The Limey
The Thing
Tron
Until the End of the World
Harold and Maude (1971) – add this if you get a 502GB drive
I vote again for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. A wild and crazy ride which captures a time that is no more. Also Tron, way ahead of its time, and still to be realised.
Your list is a good start, but it’s mostly whitebread. As Quadzilla points out, you barely have any foreign films on your list. Your indie list, where most of the good films usually come from, is also weak. For example, where is Election? Lists are good – but you shouldn’t title it the Best 250 Films Made In The Last 30 Years…

Wow, great list. Was really glad to see Spirited Away and Donnie Darko, however I would change that to Donnie Darko (Director’s Cut).
Missing is:
Rain Man
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Beautiful Mind
A good attept at a great idea…given that what the average person likes is often at odds with the Critics. I think that catagories are necessary to avoid comparing apples with oranges. “Best,” like “Great” , is a pretty generic term and conjures up different things to different people. MY 1st reaction is Drama with terrific writing and acting. ( Kinda leaves Dumb & Dumber out in the cold )
I agree with the sentiment about “old crap” . I think some old movies are touted more because of a nostalgic attatchment than the film’s merits. (Maybe someone treasures Old Yeller because their Grandfather took them to see it when they where 8 years old).
No real issues with THE LIST but I would add the following:
Drama: Jakob The Liar, Escape From Sobibor,Mississippi Burning,J.F.K.
Horror: The Exorcist, The Amittywille Horror.
Comedy: Stir Crazy, Throw Mama From The Train.
RED DAWN!!
GO WOLVERINES

[...] 250 Best Movies Made in the Last 30 Years The list is arguable, but is a nice starting point when looking for new movies to check out. (tags: lists arts) [...]
This list hits a lot of good movies I must say.If you liked Spirited Away, then you should check out Princess Mononoke. Oh wait, I think you have that one on there. Good job. Was Jaws made in time for this list?
Also, some of these movies don’t seem to be deserving of the list. I mean, Big Trouble in Little China? Seriously? It was entertaining and hilarious, but as a movie it really wasn’t great at all! I also must disagree with the Butterfly Effect, the fifth element, gremlins, hamlet, hero (how can you have that before crouching tiger hidden dragon?). Haha the neverending story? Point break? WILLOW? Little shop of horrors?
Any list without Dumb and Dumber is not one I want to see. That movie is hilarious. And believe it or not acting comedy isn’t exactly easy! I mean, to stay in character when you’re character is so out of the ordinary is a feat. There are many older movies that are great (directed toward EdNorton!). All About Eve, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Some Like it Hot pop readily into mind. Those older movies paved the way for ones today, in terms of acting and filming techniques.
Finally, please don’t add History of Violence.
I think this is a great list. I haven’t seen probably 25% but it’s a great list of films that you’d like to own. They aren’t all award-winners or ALI best, but they are things that you’d want to keep in a collection.
I’d add:
Amelie
Annie Hall
Benny and Joon
But I am A Cheerleader
Ghost World
Harrold and Maud
Jerry Maguire
Life is Beautiful
Love Actually
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Rudy
Six Degrees of Separation
What an excellent and almost completely exhaustive list, missing only these gems (I’d say):
Repo Man
Rabid Dogs
Apocalypse Oz
Small Faces
Mod F*** Explosion
Cure
Scum
Hi guys, I must tell you, I was looking for a list like this on the net to get new ideas of movies. I was a bit surprise to find so little foreign films.
Hollywood has made great movies for sure, but sadly some of them were a pale remake of a foreign one. I have seen most of the films on your list and it should be called ‘The Best 250 Movies Made In The Last 30 Years From America’.
If you start including Japanese, Spanish or any films from other countries, you cannot do without any of these following titles.Seeing your list, my guess is that you never heard about any of these, so listen:
“If you want to see a movie that you’ll never forget, that you will watch again with pleasure, something that will make you laugh, dream, cry, melt on the sofa or just think, then check out the list on IMDB and run to the store to rent one. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. I’ve been colecting movies for about 5 years now, and I’ve made about 1600 copies of films worth keeping.”
So let’s see,
The Shadow Warrior (Kagemusha) – 1980
Betty Blue (37°2 le matin) – 1986
The Last Emperor – 1987

Go, See, and Become – 2005
Black – 2005

The Deer Hunter – 1978
Kramer vs Kramer – 1979
The Killing Fields – 1984

This is just my opinion. I hope I will make you discover new styles of cinema. Some are very weird, some are very funny and sad and some are just plain crazy. All in all, most are surprising, interesting, but above all memorable.
I will enjoy all your comments on that opinion.

[...] Quadzilla at SEO Black Hat is probably someone who might be seen as creating sensationalized posts in an effort to bait links. Of course given the black hat theme of the site and blog should it be any different? Some might say his recent post on the 250 Best Movies Made in the Last 30 Years is exactly why they think link bait is a bad idea. But did you read the follow up to that post, 3 Link Bait Lessons From a Master Baiter? The follow up post is one of the more informative posts about how to create link bait that I’ve seen. Yes it does offer advice that might at first glance seem to be about artificially turning an ordinary post into link bait, but look again. It’s filled with good and sound advice on marketing and copy writing. Lesson 1 tells you to focus on the reader and not the author. Every book I’ve ever read about copywriting has offered the same advice. It’s good advice. Will people still be reading that post six months from now? I can’t say. But assuming he’s still writing they’ll be reading Quadzilla. He’s one of the better writers online and one of the few who is both entertaining and informative at the same time. Maybe some of the posts will be temporary, but they are still informative and entertaining and I will link to them, because I think others will find them informative and entertaining too. [...]
[...] Here you will find a purported list of the 250 best movies of the last 30 years. Although I would quibble with a few entries, it is generally spot-on. Enjoy! Posted in Movies, Entertainment. [...]
Hey…. I hate the MPAA as much as anybody else, but don’t do illegal downloads of these good (or not good) movies. if it wasn’t for the moviemakers, we wouldn’t have this websites for movie-nerds like me to complain! now, to get to the important part: the movies. I agree, let’s make it 35 years and add two little movies called “The Godfather” (1972) & “Jaws” (1975)
here are a list of movies that i (and maybe only i) think deserve to be on this list:
‘Jaws” & “The Godfather” (only if it’s stretched to 35 years)….
Mission: Impossible
The Whole Nine Yards (not to be confused with “The Whole 10 Yards”)
Dangerous Minds
The Italian Job (remake)
Mystery, Alaska (great sport movie… I’d put it right up there with “Rudy”, “Million Dollar Baby” & “Hoosiers”)
Hoosiers
Friday the 13th (I personally like parts 6 & 8 the best…. if you don’t think that these movies are a good idea, then I think you should take down “A Nightmare On Elm Street” & “Halloween”… they’re all the same… funny, not scary…. the only exceptions to this rule is “Evil-Dead”, ‘Carrie” & “The Shining”)
Carrie
The Shining
Nine Months
An Officer & A Gentleman (for the ladies especially….)
Fast Times At Ridgemont High
Dazed & Confused
Beavis & Butt-Head Do America (even my mom liked that one)
I like that you put “The Breakfast Club” on this list (I can recite it word-for-word), but where is “Sixteen Candles” & “Weird Science”?
okay, you said in the past 30 years… (did you forget that Disney movies are movies too & that 1991 & 1992 & 1994 seemed oscar-wild for Walt Disney Studios or do you only like computer-animated movies?)…. From 1989 to 1994, there has been 4 movies that put the classics (i.e. Snow White & The 7 Dwarfs & Cinderella) to shame…. they are:
The Little Mermaid (1989)
Beauty & The Beast (1991)
Aladdin (1992)…. (how do you forget about Aladdin?)
The Lion King (1994)
Okay, the final stage in me slamming you to the ground… the movies that sucked, why were they on here?
The Blair Which Project (seriously, the WORST movie ever made…. I don’t care if the fa**** mother****in’ creators are here, I want them to read this!)
Braveheart & Titanic were seriously, the most boring and EXTREMELY overrated movies of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I personally want to thank you for not putting crap like “Pearl Harbor” (it was a chick-flick, not a war movie), “The Day After Tommorrow”, “Spider-Man”, “Spider-Man 2″, “A.I.: Artificial Intelligence”, “E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial”, “The War of the Worlds” (good movie, but just becuase its from Steven Spielberg, along with Mel Gibson one of the two most overrated people to walk this planet, doesn’t mean it has to go on here) & finally, “The Patriot” (with Mel Gibson; it was totally inaccurate and nausiating to watch!)
There are a lot of movies I missed when I watched the list. There are also enough movies I disagreed – but it´s up to which movies belong to be on the list.
What is with following movies:
Spider-Man 1 +2 (best comic-movies ever!)
A Scanner Darkly (and all the other Richard Linklater movies?!)
Dogma (Clerks isn´t enough)
The Machinist
Collateral (What a masterpiece!!!)
Lucky Number Slevin
Jarhead
Identity
Lord of War
25th Hour
Garden State
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (really one of the 50 best pictures EVER)
And as you already posted such silly Comedies in your list like Caddyshack and Revenge of the Nerds you should really need Happy Gilmore (Sandler at his best)
The only movie on this entire list that I’m not familiar with is Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi. IMDB gives it 8.5/10 stars!?! Netflix to the rescue…
Awesome List.
If you like boondock saints or lucky number sleven, add Green Street Hooligans. Such a good/awesome movie. Also, you’ve gotta have The Warriors on there somewhere too. If you haven’t seen it, watch it.
Both of these movies make you want to be in a gang… its intense.
If anyone could recommend me some movies that are along these lines, let me know
I’m new & here are some of my main & not so mainstream choices…

I just finish a website displaying the best movies ever computed from different source of information.
As you said, some people don’t like old movies, then I propose a “by decade” classification and also “by genre”, “by country”, …
For the people voting for a movie, I try to estimate the other movies that should match them, so that should enjoy everybody because we all have different feelings about movies !
The website : http://www.bestmoviesdvd.com

Best regards
[...] Quadszilla at SEOBlackHat showed everyone (by example) of what the perfect link baiting article was when he posted an article “250 Best Movies Made In The Last 30 Years.” He then followed it up later with a post called “3 Link Bait Lessons From a Master Baiter” where he explained the article about the top movies and why it went viral. This is a must read for any of you wanting to perfect your Link Baiting game. [...]
Hi everyone,
looks like the solution is a 1TB drive and change the list to 500 movies!
Only a couple of comments.
I use to love big trouble in little china when I was little, but is it really worthy of the list? You might want to put the Bill and Ted movies. I think this is mainly a guy list! Good list overall.
Where is Underworld(2003)???
By far one of the best action and violence moves. You can come really close but you can not beat the amount of blood shed and gore in that movie
Dude gotta agree with Ed, where is underworld, or even Jerasic park but how could you not even include Jay and Silent Bob, not a great movie but funny as hell
Where is Training Day??? Please someone agree with me? How about Easy Rider?? Also I think it is a joke that One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest is not here!!!
Apologies thought list said “last 40 years” dismiss my comment on Easy Rider.
Always good to keep updating every year as there have been some great movies the last couple of years. Here are some you might want to watch that were released before October 2006.
The Natural
The Warriors
Pay It Forward
Dinner Rush
Assualt on Precinct 13 (original)
Diggstown (AKA Midnight Sting)…not many people know of this one released in the 80’s…didn’t make the movies but is on DVD…i used to recommend it when i had video libraries and most people enjoyed it.
Forgot Swimming with Sharks…great drama/play
u missed o brother where art thou
