Why isn’t GPS Latitude and Longitude saved into the meta data of a digital picture when it is taken? Wouldn’t’ a compass and level also give great meta data? (facing 20 degrees from north at a 1 percent incline).
Throw in a 1-button-push publishing and you could create the most amazing maps mashup on the Net with a logical extension to video (same idea - encode per frame or minute) to create a virtual reality that’s based on reality.
An idea like that would surely already be patented – right?

My new sony handycam does that.
I looked into buying a camera with GPS meta data built-in, and was shocked to find that you can’t find a good camera with this. (not that I could find) But I did find that some crappy cameras do exist out there with GPS. Sorta like what you’re suggesting: I was thinking about taking a whirlwind trip around the world and logging all my photo locations automatically so I could easily map them.
Theres at least on sat nav system in the UK that does this. You drive to your destination. Take a photo which logs the long/lat into the system as a favourite destination. You can then navigate by your favoruite photos.
Just a shame the route calculation on the sat nav is shit.

Surely this has been patented? hasn’t it!? The iPhone 2.0 or whatever the hell it’s called will be using a system like this…
