Those are the times I go looking to see if they have an affiliate program. Then buy the stuff through my own links. That way I know I'm at least not paying full retail.

This happened to me twice recently, but I actually got lucky both times and quickly found 10% off coupons via Google. One coupon was expired, but the cart still accepted it (saved me ~$150 on a conference).

I often wonder why more companies don't conditionally display these fields. In my case, both companies lost profit$ b/c I simply saw the promocode field and went Googling for a code. What if the company conditionally displayed (and pre-filled) the box for anyone coming in via a coupon site aff link or special promo email?...then they could save profit$ on all of their organic traffic (they also should get a boost in conversion rate by limiting pissed off customers like quads). I guess if you do tons of offline mktg, the conditional could cause some issues, but you could always post a different url on your offline collateral (ie. site.com/promo).

Just my $.02.

[...] There’s a little riff on SEO Black Hat about abandoning a shopping cart when they display a coupon code box and you don’t have one. I have to say, while I wouldn’t use the language he does, that. Yes. I totally do a search for the coupon code when I see that box. Then I always find an expired code. And. Abandon my shopping cart because I think I could be getting a better deal. You’re not alone.
Same thing happened to me just 2 days ago, trying to buy a Pingdom account.

When I first read the title, I thought you were giving away coupons for some exotic massage parlor, haha.

Shit this just happened yesterday when I was paying for some traffic thru Looksmart --- I thought paying 3 days advance AND the lack of coupon code was the dealbreaker.
