The BBC reports how China is using specially trained - and ideologically sound - internet commentators to astroturf political opinion.
The commenters are now called “the ‘50-cent party’ because of how much they are reputed to be paid for each positive posting (50 Chinese cents; $0.07; £0.05). ”
Your a Black Hat SEO Spammer and Google says they hate you if you do it on a small scale. But we all know how Google bends over backwards to do business in China. So once again, size matters. Blackhat has gone mainstream: it’s gone global, but it’s “acceptable” only if you’re big enough to ignore the rules and get away with it.
Can you imagine for a second that large companies that aren’t already following China’s lead will not want to start hiring Internet commentators to frame debates and astroturf online?
