This takes me back :)

I used to install the alexa toolbar. Create a frameset that would loaded my site 100 times and make it the browser's homepage for all staff.

Of course this was back when Alexa still had an ounce of credibility in the market ;)

That's weird, the date on this post says March 13th 2009 but this is something we did when Alexa first started and soon lost interest in. Not only is this boring and really serves no purpose but to deceive people though in this case it's not like your tricking google into giving you traffic. Gaming Alexa would only be used to deceive advertisers or buyers. (Am I wrong on this part? I really can't think why else you'd do it.)

On another note even though Alexa isn't scientific of anywhere near perfect wouldn't you rather have an accurate score coming back so you could compare to other sites and get a rough idea of how much traffic they receive?

Imagine you're going after a niche and you want to compare your traffic and alexa scores to different sites you're competing with to estimate how much traffic you would get if you displaced that site in the rankings.

Why not just say "I made a plug in" or my friend asked me to share this? Nothing wrong with that.

Also, make the site you want to boost your homepage so it gets a hit every time you launch your browser!

As an info tool I personally prefer the Quirk SearchStatus toolbar which gives much more info (Google PR, Alexa, Compete and Linkscape/mozRank) and I think has the same benefit for your Alexa ranking - at least, they say,

"Alexa queries made do affect Alexa statistics. Compete queries made do affect Compete statistics."

I like the idea, but I personally wouldn't install this add-on. Alexa has a very bad privacy history and this plugin is known to "phone home." It's reported that Alexa collects and stores info. about the data you enter into search fields and forms (in addition to the webpages you visit).
