With what I described above, there would not be a flash URL and a regular url.

This may be semantics - but I think that rather than having a flash site "alongside" the html (i.e. seperate URLs for the flash site vs the html site) you need to do a bit of layering and build the flash on top of your html (ala FAUST: http://www.space150.com/work/space150-faust).

Split Flash movies into a series of scenes which load as individual pages. This will give you many more SEO'd alternative content pages to load.

break the movie apart (can be done at a scene level), increase the visibility.

I do find it funny when I hear about anyone claiming to be an SEO expert and then talk about hating clients with flash websites, flash websites can actually make SEO so much easier and make the SEO’s job much less complicated. Having a flash site will allow the client to get the design/graphical style they want without any negative effects to the SEO. This is done thanks to like you mentioned having the HTML version of the site alongside the flash site..

So yes your post has correct information in that you are 100% whitehat if you check users if they accept cookies and have a flash player then decide which content to show. But if you IP deliver content based on if they are a search engine spider or someone else then your without question in the blackhat area and asking for trouble. Actually if you IP deliver you are a rather odd blackhat as there is no reason for this technique, not only are you just calling out to Google to penalize your site, you are also actually losing users.

Losing users, how is that possible? Most clients I see have at least 5% of their user without flash installed, so instead of showing them a link that may or may not make them decide to install flash you can if you are doing the cookie and flash check show them an actual website. Instant 5% increase in page views and while yes flash on an ecommerce site is just silly, but it happens so if your clients ecommerce site is using flash they might just get that 5% increase in sales also.

A note on ecommerce sites and flash, while yes having a flash site does make the SEO easier to handle, but having a flash website does make a “unique” user experience and one that often doesn’t work very well in trying to convert into sales. So flash IS NOT an SEO issue it is more a UI/Usability issue and if an ecommerce client had a flash website I would spend the time working towards a HTML version, even at the loss of the SEO benefits from using a Flash site.

I don’t post here often, but the whole flash thing is one that has really confused a lot of people and now I often use it as a benchmark when trying to gauge a new hire or a fellow SEO’s experience. In fact the above information I haven’t even shared at any of the SES/SMX events that I’ve spoken at as sometimes I regrettably withhold facts for my own benefit, but for you and the other readrers here consider it a early Christmas gift.

Shameless plug for myself: after over 11 years in the SEO industry, last month I started my own blog, while not 100% SEO focused it does have a lot of old presentations, case studies and documents I’ve created over the years. The site is called Miscellaneous Information due to it containing everything about my crazy life and it is located at: Misc.info ( http://www.misc.info )
