The Real Reason Google Dropped Youtube Support

So you’ve probably heard that Google has decided to drop IE6 support for Youtube.

At first I just figured “Cool, we’ll get more people away from IE6.” But the real reason is that they want to promote Chrome:

youtubeie6

That first Slot will get a majority of the clicks.

Very clever Google. Evil. But Clever.

    Hi,

Read your title?? – Google wants to drop Youtube?

Or google wants to drop IE access on youtube?

But maybe not so – based on the number “2″ eye movement, logos in the middle could get clicks as well. Moreover, Google chrome logo is very soft compared to the strong lines and colors of other logos.

I’m pretty sure there is several reason(s). As a web developer, I know I have to spend many hours making sure the sites I make look good on IE6, or at least “function”. YouTube isn’t the only one who has stepped up and said, “We are no longer going to waste time and money on IE6″. As huge and as complex YouTube is (especially in the JavaScript department), you can wager that the developers would spend hundreds if not thousands of hours trying to make the site compatible with IE6 (and below).

They want to promote their new browser, but they also want to stop wasting time.

I think it’s being a little touchy to call this evil when they are actually showing the logos and links to 4 other competitor products alongside their own. Jeez.

Yeah, Google :) . But the funny thing is, why is FF on the last place? Didn’t google promote FF and stuff like that? They could put FF on second place insted Opera, IF they don’t have any secret deals with Opera :) . Or maybe they are so afraid of FF? :)

    • QuadsZilla says:

Opera’s default search is Google. Hell, they’ve probably done all the testing on CTR and know that that particular configuration gets the most clicks exactly where they want them to go. It’s what I would do.

  6. GWO says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t exactly call it evil. They have a right to promote their own products on their own site, surely?

I would call it good business sense maybe.

    • QuadsZilla says:

Well, it’s genius. But they actually have to jump through hoops to make the site NOT work for IE6. It’s not like IE6 just won’t do the cool ass shit they want to do with Youtube. No. Instead they’re just like “IE6 is bad, and we got a browser to promote. Win – Win.

  7. Maik says:

@QuadsZilla, of the german youTube-Version is a random active for the borwser-logos. and this is not evil :)

  8. tweetivism says:

    Dude,

IE6 is a front end developer nightmare and people are more than happy to have Google force people off it.

While they are doing the web community a favor, they of course, are going to promote their product, if they didn’t, they would be utterly stupid

  9. QuadsZilla says:

All you people that say it’s this noble deed, do the same thing with your own websites. Deny IE6 people from coming without upgrading.

  10. Blacksheep says:

Personally I think anyone who uses Chrome should get a good beating. Another crap browser isnt what the web needs, oh and if people are using IE6 then they ought to get a beating aswell, Beatings alround then Lmfao

Reload your page, the logo are placed in random order.
