Bet on Sports Sportsbook CEO Arrest Commentary

When I first heard about the Arrest of BetOnSports CEO Carruthers in Dallas, I thought that he was foolishly operating the business out of the US. That was not the case:

It said that the Scot had been detained while changing flights in America en route from the UK to Costa Rica, where the company is based. It said that it was “seeking clarification as to the basis of the detention”.

Mr Carruthers, a former Ladbrokes executive, was changing flights at Dallas Fort Worth airport on Sunday evening when he was stopped while walking through the transit lounge with his wife.

The detention of Mr Carruthers, a British citizen resident in Costa Rica . . .

So he’s a British Citizen who lives in Costa Rica and the US decided to arrest him while he was changing planes. That’s downright dirty.

People sometimes complain about companies like Yahoo and Google and their buckling to Chinese Law. In fact, online gambling is legal and regulated in the UK and in Costa Rica where these sports books operate. But the US has no problems arresting forign citizens who have committed no crime on US soil and were in fact operating legitimate business in thier home countries. There is no difference between what the US did and you getting arrested on a flight layover in China for for publishing something about democracy on your website.

The hypocrisy on the issue of gambling makes me sick to my stomach. It would be one thing if our slimey scumbag politicians were against gambling across the board. For example, if we did not encourage gambling at every 7-11 through the state lottery and we outlawed all forms of gambling (like betting on poneys and on Indian reservations) then that would be one thing. It would still be retarded and an infringement on personal liberty in what was once the Home of the Free and the Brave, but at least it would not be hypocritical.

“Illegal commercial gambling across state and international borders is a crime,” said U.S Attorney Catherine Hanaway of the Eastern District of Missouri in a press release. “Misuse of the Internet to violate the law can ultimately only serve to harm legitimate businesses.

And when she says “Legitimate Business,” she is refferring of course to her campaign contributers like Riverboat Casino ($1,150 in 2002 race) and other casinos:

Republicans were once reluctant about accepting campaign cash from Las Vegas-based casino companies. This year, the party’s legislative leaders are receiving more than twice as much from casinos as Democrats. Key GOP-related committees received $90,320 from January to September, compared with $37,270 for Democrats.

House Minority Leader Catherine Hanaway, R-Warson Woods, solicited the donations, claiming that casinos were among over 300 businesses — from mothball factories to ham-curing plants — that she visited to bring in checks for the GOP.

‘My pitch is the same as it is with everybody: that there’s an unprecedented opportunity for Republicans to take the House, and we need financial support to deliver our message,’ Hanaway said.

I hate people like that. I really, really do. “Gambling is wrong . . . unless you contribute to my campaign. Then I’ll pass legislation to lower taxes for your casino.”

Today’s US policy on gambling is a function of one thing and one thing only: the political contributions of the brick and mortar casinos (like the Indian Reservations). The only thing driving our Gambling Policy today is political corruptions and bribes – and that is the real crime that is being perpetrated on the American public today.

The online gambling companies are begging to be legalized, taxed and regulated in the US. Just think of the tax revenue the US is currently forfeiting in the face of record budget deficits – it’s to the tune of several billion dollars every year.

As an act of protest, I have decided to open a white hat site dedicated to online betting, sports handicapping, casinos, and poker: SlyBets.com. I have never really tried to compete in an uber-competitive area before so my expectations are modest. If I get up to 10k uniques a month, I’ll start a forum.

If you too are outraged by these political shanagans, you can voice your protest by linking to slybets.com with some juicy gambling anchor text. ;)

Will Online Poker Become Illegal?

Washington DC is looking to follow the lead of the assholes in Washington State by making playing poker online illegal.

As of June 7th, playing poker online is the moral equalivant of a violent rape in Washington State. Think about that. Laws like this degrade the respect society has for the rule of law in general – much as prohibition lead to an increase in overall crime.

Even if you do not play poker, this is about what you think should be the size and scope of government. We do not want our government spying on us to enforce ubsurd regulations.

Don´t think this is a slippery slope? Look at what is already happening in Washington State just a week after their law passed.

The first casualty in the state’s war on Internet gambling is a local Web site where nobody was actually doing any gambling.

What a Bellingham man did on his site was write about online gambling. He reviewed Internet casinos. He had links to them, and ran ads by them. He fancied himself a guide to an uncharted frontier, even compiling a list of “rogue casinos” that had bilked gamblers.

All that, says the state — the ads, the linking, even the discussing — violates a new state law barring online wagering or using the Internet to transmit “gambling information.”

These types of laws will infringe on your liberty. The PPA sent out this email today and I thought I would pass it on to you:

Dear PPA Member:

Thank you for standing with the Poker Players Alliance to protect poker. Our voices are being heard in Washington, D.C. Over the past few weeks more than 15 thousand letters have been sent to Capitol Hill telling Congress to keep poker legal. We believe this has helped to slow the bill down, but the U.S. House of Representatives is poised to vote on the online gambling prohibition as early as July 11th.

This week (July 2 – 9), the U.S. House is on Congressional recess and most Representatives are working from their offices back in your state. Now is a good time to call your Representative’s local office and tell them to oppose, H.R. 4777, the Internet Gaming Prohibition Act.

How do I call my Representative?

Simple. Click here.
Then using your zip code you can find your Representative.

What do I say?

Rep. XXX, should oppose H.R. 4777, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act.

Regulation of online poker is a more sensible solution than an outright ban.

Rep. XX should become a cosponsor of H.R. 5474. This bill requires Congress to objectively examine how Internet gambling can be regulated and taxed rather than driven underground.

Americans know that prohibitions don’t work. Congress should ensure that I can continue to enjoy poker on the Internet in a safe and regulated environment and not make the same mistake.

Telling American adults how to use their hard-earned money, whether on e-bay or on playing internet poker is not the federal government’s job, and I object to Rep XXX deputizing banks to monitor my debits and credits.

Again, it is essential that you make your voice heard. Please call!

Sincerely,

Michael Bolcerek, president
Poker Players Alliance

Every letter and phone call counts. I am throwing in the line “If you vote to outlaw online poker, I will vote against you in every future election that I can and tell all of my friends and family to do the same.”

Dan from Kloakit Wins 1st SEO Poker Tournament

It sure is it fitting that someone who runs I hate Google should win the first SEO Poker Tournament.

Dan from Kloakit (and ihategoogle.org) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. He knocked me into third place when I held A5 vs his 77. A 7 on the flop sealed my doom.

In the final hand vs Jason, Dan held AQ vs Jason Bailey’s 99. It was raised by Jason, Dan pushed all in and was called. An ace hit the board and no 9 was to be found so Dan Took home the title.

Congratulations Dan! vgg

Those of you who couldn’t make it missed out on a very fun tournament. On the other hand, there was some solid poker being played at the tables, so you might have saved yourself some money.

If you’re up for the challenge next time, I’ll probably run another one in a couple of months if there is enough interest. Next time, we’ll put up some more prizes like some scraper sites, some good domains or some cool scripts and tools.

Dan has agreed that if there is another tournament, he will put up a copy of his professional grade cloaking software kloakit. What other great prizes can we get in there – who else would like to sponsor this next event?

If you’re interested in playing in or sponsoring a future SEO Poker Tournament, make sure to let me know.

Shuffle Up and Deal – It’s Poker Time!

In spite of having fewer people than originally singed up, we will be proceeding with the SEO No limit Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament on Saturday at Noon EST, 9:00 Pacific US.

I’m looking forward to it. Because I received a couple of emails today asking if it’s still on and if they can still join, I have contacted the Poker site and they are willing to extend the signup deadline to midnight tonight and they agreed!

See you at the tables!

SEO Poker Tournament

We have found a replacement Sponsor for the SEO Poker Tournament. We looked at several great sites and decided to work with Pacific Poker / 888 online casino.

We were close to going with Bodog, which is also a great site (and they have a sportsbook!), but unfortunately they cannot accept the Canadian players we already have signed up.

They do have a clause about not signing up yourself or your family members, so don’t bother if you’re only thinking about an extra bonus for yourself

Now, on to the SEO poker Tournament. We don’t have much time before the 17th and I don’t want to move this first Tournament again.

Here’s The Info on the SEO Poker Tournament:

When: Saturday June 17th at 12:15 Eastern (9:15 AM Pacific, 4:15 PM UTC/GMT, 5:15 pm BST)

Buy-in: $100 +$10 entrance fee

Who can play? Anyone with a website, $110, and a Poker Account.

Tournament Structure: No limit Texas Holdem. Each Player starts with 3000 chps. The blinds go up every 15 minutes.

As you may know, it can take some time to verify bank accounts through the funding services like firepay, so please: open the pacific poker account today and get at least $110 in there for the tournament.

Your first deposit will receive a 25% bonus – All entrants will receive a link on the Tournament participants list.

We need to verify all the accounts by next Tuesday (June 13), which gives us basically no time. We need at least 20 people verified by then. We had 23 before, so I´m hoping this will not be a problem.

Update: I have started a site with Poker News, Sports Handicapping and special casino offers called Sly Bets.

Party Poker Problems – Poker Tourney to be Moved

The SEO Poker Tournament must be moved to the 17th of June and we will be choosing a different site to host the Tourney – I will announce where in the next 3 days. I have already contacted everyone who was on the particpants list on Wednesday by e-mail with an apology.

Although Party Poker is financially stable, they have screwed things up beyond belief for my readers, myself and the SEO Poker tournament.

If you are really interested in the insannity I encountered dealing with the Party Poker Affiliate Reps, you can read the e-mail conversation below. It’s pretty amazing but it’s really just drama. If you want the short and sweet version it’s this:

Don’t do business with Party Poker.

Funding An Online Gambling Account

Many of you intend to play in the SEO Poker Tournament but have not yet registered and funded a Party Poker account. I understand. You’re doing what most people do – you’re waiting until the last minute. Since we need all entrants by the 21st (and it can take 3-4 days to fund an account), it’s getting time to get off your butt and register.

In the US, there are very few credit cards that can be used to fund online gambling accounts like Party Poker.

I use IGM Pay which uses your bank account to fund your Party Poker Account. To use, you must register your bank account with iGM-Pay and verify it – this process usually takes about 3-4 days. If you have ever verified a bank account on PayPal – you’ll understand because it’s the same process. Thereafter transfers into and out of your account are mostly instant and there are no transaction fees.

From a safety / stability perspective, Party Poker is rock solid. Aside from having dealt more than 4.2 Billion hands, they are a publicly traded company on the London Stock Exchange – PRTY . They had over [corrected] $970 million in revenue last year and a profit margin of 25% – so it’s not some fly by night operation.

Here’s what other people are saying about the SEO No Limit Texas Hold’em Tournament:

“Where else can you get poker with a free lifetime link for a one time fee?” – Aaron Wall

“I talk a lot about SEO for Poker, but I’ve never actually played. This should be fun.” – [unnamed tournament participant]

“Just imagine winning the tourney, it’ll be like hitting the link lottery across all the SEO blogs.” – MrTurner

Remember, you must have a website to play and everyone who enters will be put on the Tournament Participants List.

So, If you still don’t have a Party Poker account, you can sign up for one here. After it’s funded, send me your party poker username and your website URL to play.

SEO No Limit Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament

On Saturday, May 27th at 12:15 Eastern, SEO Black Hat will be running a private No Limit Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament at Party Poker for the SEO and Blogosphere Community. The entrance will be $110 and prizes will be paid out based on the number of entrants.

Some big names in SEO have already agreed to participate including: Jeremy Shoemaker (AKA shoemoney), Jim Boykin (we build pages), David Naylor (AKA DaveN), and Jason Duke (Strange Logic). You can listen to DaveN and JasonD on Strikepoint and shoemoney here.

As we SEOs are always battling the search engines, I invite Matt Cutts, Jeremy Zawodny and Robert Scoble to play: I will pay their entrance fees should they choose to participate and, if I am knocked out of the Tournament by any of them, I will donate $10,000 to a charity of their choice. (note: They must accept in the next 7 days for the bounty to apply).

No limit means there is no limit to how many of your chips you can bet on a given hand. It will be a $110 dollar buy-in and everyone will start with the same number of chips. So, $110 is all you could loose. If we get more than 100 entrants, 1st prize will be more than $2,500 with payouts down to 20th place or more.

If you would like to play poker with some of your favorite Bloggers and SEOs – here is your chance. Everyone who signs up will be put on the Tournament Participant list along with a link to their websites. This way everyone will know who they are playing against.

It’s going to be a lot of fun. I’m sure they’ll be some colorful table talk, some great networking and I expect a healthy turn out. So what are you waiting for? Sign up now.
