Google Torpedoes Navy: You Sunk my Battleship!

You sunk my battleship

This is the story of Bill the Navy Guy. Bill learned a battle plan that worked like a charm:

(computer spun content) + (aged domains) + (Adsense) = $ Money in the Bank $

Bill worked his way up where he was purchasing hundreds of domains per day and was hosting thousands of domains across more than 65 dedicated servers. He was pulling in more than $60,000 per month from Google Adsense.

$60,000+ per Month . . . on 1 Adsense account.

Here’s the kicker: All his content across his entire Network of thousands of sites was spun from a total of about 45 sentences. So you could Google one of his sentence fragments and find his entire Network.

What could possibly go wrong here?

The curator of a Western art museum commissioned a local artist to paint a mural-sized painting of Custer’s Last Thought. The artist was told to make it highly symbolic of Custer’s mindset during the debacle at the Little Bighorn. Deep in thought, the artist went to his studio. After many false starts, he proceeded to paint an enormous oil painting.

Finally, after months of work, the opening of the exhibit drew a crowd of people for the unveiling of this, the centerpiece of the exhibit. The canopy came off revealing the artist’s large painting:

In the foreground was a beautiful crystalline blue lake with a single fish leaping. Around the fish’s head is a halo. In the background, the hills and meadows are covered with naked Native American couples copulating.

The curator was both disgusted and baffled by what he saw. In a rage he turned to the artist and asked, “What the hell has this got to do with Custer’s Last Thought?”

The artist replied, “It’s simple. Custer’s last thought must have been, ‘Holy Mackerel! … Where did all these fucking Indians come from?’”

Unlike General Custer to the Indians, Google had an answer to Bill the Navy Guy and Torpedoed the Admiral’s lone Adsense account: $60,000+ a month revenue to $0. Overnight.

Google Battle Lessons

War Buffs and Search Engine Spammers alike will want to learn from Bill the Navy Guy’s critical mistakes. Here are some of the lessons we can glean from Bill’s defeat:

1. Diversify and protect your supply lines. Redundancy is the law of the military; you never want a single point of failure. In fact, that’s why the DoD invented the Internet. Even if you love Adsense, you should never have all your sites under the same Adsense code. Multiple Adsense Accounts + other PPC Engines + Affiliate Revenue makes it so that a hit to any one of your supply lines does not cause a total system failure.

2. Troop Diversification. Did Alexander the Great have just light cavalry? Did William Wallace have only pikemen? Does the US Navy have only submarines? No! By spinning all his content from the same 45 sentences, Bill the Navy Guy went into battle with all the same type of troops. Don’t make that same mistake; build your sites from multiple content sources.

3. Never give the enemy your battle plans or the locations of your troops. You think the landing at Normandy would have been as successful had we sent Hitler the battle plan and troop locations 2 weeks before the invasion? By using the same Adsense account and leaving such huge footprints, Bill the Navy guy might as well have sent Google this email every day:

To: Google Spam Team
From: Bill The Navy Guy
Subject: Please Ban Me

Dear Google,

I am spamming your index and using Adsense to monitize. Please ban my sites and Adsense account at your earliest convenience. Here is the complete list:

[list of every site]

-Bill the Navy Guy

PS: Don’t Give up the Ship

Even if you’re not an SEO Black Hat, there’s a good reason not to use the same Adsense account across your network of sites. Let’s say you want to interlink sites in your 300 site network. With all your sites on the same Adsense account, Google can and will discount the value of intra network links. Instead of a potential 299 quality backlinks, you’re probably looking at a value closer to several on site links (closer to Navigation links).

Don’t lose the War do to tactical mistakes: Get multiple Adsense accounts and diversify your online income to other sources.

3 Link Bait Lessons From a Master Baiter

Yesterday’s off-topic post of 250 movies made it to the digg / popular page and is right now climbing on the delicious / popular page (and more delicos would be nice - Hint. Hint.)

But was it REALLY off topic?

Today’s post will focus on why that post was successful and give you 3 helpful lessons to write better link bait.

The real story started something like this:

From the land of off topic posts, I present to you a list of the 250 Best Movies Made in the Last 30 years.

Why the last 30 years?

Well I’m creeping up on 30. Since I’ll be returning to the States in December for a few weeks, I want to get a 500 Gig Hard Disk full of movies I enjoy for my return trip to Brazil. One of the things I miss about being down here is not having access to movies.

So I started researching which films I’ve enjoyed and every time I see these “Best Film Lists” they always include the same stuff from the 40s, 50s, 60s and early to mid 70s.

My younger brother owes me about $1500 and he agreed to try to round up and rip all the movies on the list to work off some of what he owes me. I just put in the order for the 500 GB external hard drive and a new Mac Book Pro. Plus, I’m sure if I post a list like this I’ll get some great feed back on the movies I missed.

I took a look at the post as written and realized it was shit. Why should you (my readers) give a rats ass about me? The focus needed to change from ME to YOU for you to be interested. That’s when the idea for the first Hook came in:

Wouldn’t it be great if you had a 500 Gig Hard Drive full of all the best movies ever made?

By changing the focus from ME and my life to YOU and your life the post becomes 100 fold more engaging. Suddenly, we’re working on hooking you up and fulfilling your dream, rather than blabbing on and on about my life.

Link Bait Lesson 1: Good link bait focuses on the Reader not the Author.

Now, if you recall from the ten ways to make the front page of digg:

9. Insult as many groups as you can. Flamewars are popular for a reason. Throw out bombs that dare people to comment on your story.

I didn’t have to just omit the classics - I had to shit on them! That way, someone is bound to get pissed off and throw out flames. I had to say that MY list was the best and that if you like old movies, you suck. So the intro evolved to:

Who wants to see that old crap?

Link Bait Lesson 2: Controversy will incite passion. Passion drives links.

Then to pepper things up, I remembered that everyone hates the RIAA. Since the post was not likely to get many DVD sales if it didn’t get links, Dugg, or Delicoed anyway, the best rout was to not bother with those Amazon links (less work, less spammy) and say the reason was so that we can stick it to the RIAA!

but I’d rather you go download or Rent & Rip them just to piss off the RIAA

Manipulative? Sure a little. But that’s what link bait is. You have to think of these things so your stories have hooks to draw people in.

Link Bait Lesson 3: If you can pile on to a quasi-political cause that has widespread acceptance, it will drive support and fanfare.

But Quads - who is the master baiter?

I am. Master Baiting is what I was born to do. ;)

Amazing Real Search Queries

We got our hands on a source for real searches from “a major search engine”. These are not referral logs from any site, but actual searches typed into the search engine. It’s similar to the AOL database in that sense. While loading up 5,824,601 of the real search phrases for our forum members to use, I took a look at some of these crazy search queries. Here were some of the highlights:

how do i stop taking phentermine
stop taking lexapro
bus stop whore
look up young girls skirts
how to kill yourself in 60 secounds
how to kill a sister
how to kill dogs with antifreeze
how to castrate your husban
my husband doesn’t care about our marriage and my kids won’t talk to him
kurt cobain is a god
33% of women say they’ve had this happen to them at work. 80% would like to have it happen
how can you help save the rain forest
where does bill gates live

There are tons more amazing searches in there. Unlike the AOL searches, our db does not link the search to the users. Seeing things like this only reinforce the need for Internet privacy. Do you want slimely politicians getting there hands on information like this for blackmail, campaigns, or political purposes? I know I don’t. How long before some “high morality” group thinks it’s a good idea to legislate against Thoughtcrimes?

Anyway enough with the politics and onto making money. Forum members can now download the entire list of 5,824,601 real search phrases from this thread.

Enjoy!

SEO Consultant Natasha Robinson Wins $250 Contest

We had a few entries for the $250 SEO Black Hat Description contest. The details were at the top of our home page and read:

$250 to whoever comes up with an awesome 250-310 character description of SEO Black Hat that is funny / witty / humorous, and includes all of the following themes: Effective, Insightful, Blackhat SEO, Linkbait, Link Spamming, The Private Black Hat Search Engine optimization forum, and Ranking in Google.

Today we have a winner! SEO Consultant Natasha Robinson aka: That Girl From Marketing took the $250 prize with this description:

Tired of useless Top 10 Lists for ranking in Google? Looking for effective and insightful info? SEO Black Hat Blog offers articles on Blackhat SEO, Linkbait & Link Spamming. And if you need to escape White Hat SEO Whiners, check out The Private Black Hat Search Engine Optimization Forum.

Here’s why that description is so good:

1) It Fits Perfectly within the Target number of characters that appear on a search result (286 characters).
2) It is concise. There are no excess words but she managed to include all the keywords we were targeting.
3) It’s written in a way to draw in new readers. Those questions in the beginning are designed to create interest. It asks if you have a certain need and then offers to fill that need.
4) There is a certain elegance to it that you’ll understand if you try to move, remove, or add any words.

Yes it looks simple – but that’s the beauty of powerful writing.

Thank you and congratulations Natasha!

Click Distance Matters.

As an SEO experiment, a little less than a month ago we:
1. Removed all the categories from the sidebar
2. Listed titles of every post with links every page
3. Got rid of the Google Sitemap.

Because we updated the theme on friday to include a new navigational setup, it’s time for some observations about the experiment.

For the month of September, SEO Black Hat had these search referral numbers:
Google 24889
Yahoo 1047
MSN 503
Ask Jeeves 91
Google Images 82

In August, 2006 with search referrals of
14258 - Google
1603 - MSN
1266- Yahoo
41 - Ask Jeeves
19 - Google Images

and these numbers in July
11995 - Google
1145 - MSN
828 - Yahoo
514 - Google Images
34 - Ask Jeeves

There was a 74% climb in the number of Google search referrals. MSN switched to live – and live hated my old layout because it was ugly (let’s see if that picks up any with the new design).. Yahoo was down slightly and Ask Jeeves up slightly.

Also of interest is that SEO black hat had gone supplemental after 182 results prior to the experiment. Today, SEO Black hat does not go supplemental until 554 results (which is pretty good considering this is only my 334th blog post.)

Of course, all this did not happen in a vacuum. I continued to write posts and people linked to those posts. Also, I took advantage of two internet “trends” with a couple of my posts that contributed to these search referrals:

Keyword Search Referrals
Fortuny 3151
lonelygirl15 715

Those Keywords, which accounted for about a third of the increase, should probably be disregarded.

The private SEO Black Hat forums increased stickyness and number of visits. Therefore, if Google is tracking user behavior, there’s a good chance that SEO Black Hat would be seen as more authoritative site.

My theory is that Google probably does track user behavior and is factoring this into their algorithm. It also seems very likely that Google cares about click distance from the homepage – especially for indexing purposes (as in: what goes supplemental).

What is click distance? Click distance is the minimum number of clicks it would take you to get from one page to another. During the experiment, the click distance from the home page to any post (or from one post to another) was 1.

What does that mean for your site design? Make sure your navigation is set up well. Google sitemaps are not the answer. If a post is 10 clicks from the homepage, it’s going to be a lot harder for that post to rank in the search engines.

I’ll detail what changes were made to SEO Black Hat from an on page SEO and usability perspective throughout this week.

Recycling Front Page Digg Stories

1. William George of pugetsystems.com writes an article about dual Dual Processor vs Dual Core. It makes front page of digg 111 days ago.

2. Frameworkx.com reposts the entire article and gets it to the front page of digg today.

Here’s the kicker, if you check out the farameworkx article, they are even hotlinking the images from the original article. LOL. Now that’s ballsy.

From the Digg Comments:

Dude, all they did was just repost *our* article! http://www.pugetsystems.com/articles.php?id=23

They did attribute you in the bottom of the article - the poster just didn’t see that or chose to use the ‘Framewokx’ repost for whatever insidious reason he might have.

They are stealing bandwidth for those images as well. They didn’t even have the courtesy to ask they were too lazy to try and make it look like they wrote the article.

Well, then the solution is to go in and do a little mod_rewrite magic in your apache config. for these guys. :)

Amen, Seumas. 111 days ago! http://digg.com/hardware/Dual_Processor_vs_Dual_Core

Indeed, why rack your brain trying to come up with something that can make the front page of digg? Just take anything that is 4+ months old, post it to a legit looking site, digg it about 60 times and you should be in business!

Although, I might avoid hotlinking any of the original images ;)

$10k a week on Myspace

Boogybonbon has anther nice post on making money with myspace bulletin system.

The kid(exaro) claims that he made “$X,XXX.XX” within the first 24 hours of doing this.

After digging through all the post I have managed to get a good idea what he is doing.

In a nutshell he is posting html to the bulletin system, and when a user clicks the link it will send the user to his website while at the same time send a email from that user to all his friends, and when they click the link it will do the same until everyone has run out of friends to click links.

Although this no longer works, it is interesting to see how it was accomplished.

Hijacking RSS Feeds

“A list” Blogger Guy Kawasaki demonstrates how to get your RSS feed hijacked. Well, actually someone else does the demonstrating, Guy just let his feedburner subscription expire.

Message to Guy… See? This is what I’m talking about. By allowing your Feedburner feed to get deleted, you’ve opened your subscribers up to having somebody else (like me) to come along, create a feed by the same name in Feedburner, and capture the eyeballs of your subscribers.

Where the hell are the ads? I sure as hell would have clicked.

Hat tip to Threadwatch (posted by Graywolf).

I’m finally back in Brazil and should be back to normal posting after I catch up with a few things. I haven’t read much in the last 2 weeks - did I miss anything essential?
